Vivup are delighted to be partnering with Re-Cycle (Bikes to Africa) and to support their mission to recycle used bikes and provide rural African communities with the means to a better life

This partnership will now provide the employees we support the opportunity to donate their used bikes to Re-Cycle rather than ending up in landfill

Why donate?

Across the UK millions of bikes lie unused and rusting, whereas in some parts of Africa, many people have no access to any kind of transport. Re-Cycle send good quality used bikes to the most rural communities in Africa which dramatically improves the lives of the recipients and helps bring social change in vital areas such as:

  • Education – Bikes help children get to school and cuts their journey by as much as 75%*
  • Livelihoods – A bike can increase the income of a family in rural Africa by 35%*
  • Health – A bike can help a single person carry 5 times the amount of clean water*

How it works

  • Once an employee has decided to donate their used bike, all they need to do is search for their nearest bike drop off point here. Additionally, Halfords have over 70 drop off points nationwide
  • The bike will then be sent to Re-Cycle headquarters where it will be prepared and then loaded into a container to make its way to Africa
  • Once the bikes have arrived at their destination the Re-Cycle partnership in Africa is responsible for the distribution of the bikes. Re-Cycle also works to train local mechanics in how to maintain and service bikes
  • In the past 12 months, Re-Cycle have sent 9 containers with 4,604 bikes to Africa

The target for the next 12 months is 14 containers with around 7,000 bikes

Vivup is always on the lookout for environmentally positive and sustainable options for our clients and the employees we support. Re-Cycle will now become one of the key community partners we work with who share our values and will help support our on-going social value agenda
